I was fascinated when I read about something called the ‘spotlight bias’ a few years back.
Basically it’s the idea that no one is paying anywhere near as much attention to you as you think they are because they’re so wrapped up in their own lives.
I think I have suffered an almost inverse of that in that I’ve not wanted to ‘bore’ you with too much of the back story of Elevate98.
However when I have, people have seemed to enjoy it so I’m going to start going more in-depth on certain aspects of the business.
The first is a phrase I use whenever I’m thinking about our building design.
Posh spit and sawdust.
I absolutely LOVE the old bodybuilding gym culture where it’s gritty, dirty and very much function over style.
However, as I’ve got older I’ve found more of a taste for nicer restaurants and environments that get the style and vibe just right.
We have, and continue to, try and merge the two.
We want it to look and feel as nice as possible but ultimately we are a training and coaching facility at heart.
That means that when we have any spare budget our first thought is whether we can send the staff on a course or add in a class or service that will help the members before fancy lights.
It means a lot of the fixtures and fittings you see in the gym are actually upcycled to save some budget.
It means we don’t have the fancy lights or music systems some of these other boutique gyms do.
But what we do have? Good people who are constantly adapting, learning and growing. Substance with a little bit of style. Posh spit and sawdust.
