How NOT to start the year...

Let's be real, today is the proper start to 2025 isn't it?

No one starts new year on a Wednesday!

This is a tricky time of year to navigate. On one hand you have goals and aspirations to make 2025 the best year yet.

On the other side, many of us have had 2 weeks of downtime and getting out of bed for work today was a struggle, never mind attacking those new year's goals.

The reality is there is no 'perfect' way to approach these things.

I'm here to tell you not to go 'all or nothing' mode but when I set my own goals and habits some are pretty full on so I'm a hypocrite haha!

So I decided to make a bullet point list of a few things to avoid:

-Not reviewing what worked last year.

Whilst there are probably things that didn't go to plan last year, I bet some things did!

I always start by reviewing what I want to do MORE of rather than just adding new things.

-Having all outcome based goals.

An outcome goal is all about the end result (being a certain weight, running a marathon etc).

I'm not here to tell you not too set those goals as I think they are valuable and indeed I've set some myself but I do think you should consider the inputs that will lead to those goals being hit.

For example we aren't actually in control of getting to a certain weight in a certain time frame but we can control our steps, calorie tracking and exercise inputs.

-Setting targets based on other people.

This is dangerous for a couple of reasons. First of all if you set your goals based on what other people want to achieve then the chances are you'll give up when it gets difficult as you aren't intrinsically motivated by it.

Secondly it may be a realistic goal for them but not for you.

I'm all for pushing boundaries but we also need to be realistic. Take me and my dad as an example.

We both wanted to set a running based goal this year but our starting points are very different. He has never run further than 10k while I've done a lot more running.

With that in mind I have signed up to an ultra-marathon while he has signed up to a half-marathon.

This leads me too..

-Comparison!!!

I think we all know by now that comparison is a dangerous game but it doesn't stop us falling into the trap of doing it.

We NEVER see what goes on behind closed doors of the people we are comparing ourselves too so we can't make an accurate judgement on whether we would even trade their success for what they went through to get it.

Hopefully that gives you a little bit of guidance when deciding on this year's plans.

As I said previously we have a free goal-setting workshop coming very soon, the date will be confirmed this week!

P.S. There are so many exciting things coming at Elevate98 I don't even know where to start. The new year shred, Hyrox programmes, educational webinars and much more just in Q1!
